Attorney Matthew McGowan, a Pierce County native, serves our community as an attorney by providing committed, affordable legal representation to individuals facing criminal charges.
Matthew began his career in criminal defense in 2002 as support staff for The Defender Association, the oldest and largest non-profit agency providing public defender services to Seattle and King County. He returned to The Defender Association in 2007 as a University of Washington Law School intern, practicing criminal law and preparing his first cases for trial.
During law school, the Public Interest Law Association awarded Matthew a grant to pursue his interest in criminal defense. He also participated in the Innocence Project Northwest, working to free innocent prisoners using DNA and other new forms of scientific evidence.
Today, Matthew keeps his practice tightly focused on criminal law. He is admitted to practice in all of Washington's superior, district and municipal courts, as well as in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. Matthew is a member of the Tacoma-Pierce County Bar Association, the Pierce County Department of Assigned Counsel Conflict Counsel Panel, and recently received a national scholarship to participate in the National Criminal Defense College.
